  • India Palace

My experience with Indian restaurants has been primarily in New York's East Village, on St. Mark's Place, where the scent of chiles and cardamom hangs from the doorways. Although these eateries serve delicious food, the rooms are always quite dark- the way New Yorkers like it, but not this Indiana country girl. India Palace is light, bright, and decorated with paintings of Indian women weaving on a loom, obligatory elephant statues, a Shiva, and of course, the Taj Mahal. - Lisa Sorg

  • Madras Pavilion

If the ambiance says operating room, the food screams saris. Madras Pavilion lavishes its creativity on southern Indian vegetarian dishes, including kadai bindi okra curry. Spooned over madras' impeccable white rice, it could make vegans of many of us. But for the fiery lamb vindaloo, that is.

This favorite of at least one five-star chef focuses on cuisine, not decor, and the devotion is apparent in traditional dishes redolent of their spice-rich homeland. -- Ron Bechtol (02/09)

  • Simi's Indian Cuisine

In an elegant setting with traditional Indian music playing in the background, Simi's serves several selections prepared in an authentic tandoor oven, such as the Tandoori Shrimp ($11.95) or Tandoori Snapper ($9.95). A lunch buffet ($6.95) lets you sample a few of the more popular dishes, and at night, you can choose from several combination dishes. The small bar pours a decent selection of beer and wine.
