Ken Ludwig’s tribute to the great English farces of the 1930s and 1940s pulls the rug out from underneath the stuffy denizens of a private country club. Deadhorse 5/25 8:00PM

Time — and possibly Dead Horse’s dabbling in death metal on their 1996 album BOIL(ing) — dealt former lead shouter Allen “Alpo” Price a cruel hand. “I can’t sing so good anymore,” Alpo laughingly laments on the recent Making a Dead Horse Live DVD. Their solution? Recruiting a fifth horseman, Michael Argo, who capably injects a menacing presence into the Houston band while remaining true to their hard-earned legacy. The DVD indisputably proves that the reactivated Horse is no desperate cash-grab attempt. The DVD chronicles a riotous Argo debut at the sold-out H-town reunion show in 2011, with a couple of Austin performances (including their Fun Fun Fun Fest set) further cementing the fact the resurrected Horse is as consistent as it is corrosive. With The Cutthroats and Pillcrusher. (See Dead Horse feature at sacurrent.com).

  • Black Flag
    Black Flag 5/25 8:00PM

If you’ve ever lamented that you were born too late to see one of America’s founding hardcore punk bands, worry no more. And if you’ve ever worried that you’d never see that band split into two factions and beef at each other like an old married couple, well, you’re in luck there, too.  The “official” version of Black Flag, claiming that title by dint of being led by guitarist and SST label boss Greg Ginn, hits the Korova for an all-ages show, just like the gigs your parents used to go to before Ginn qualified for AARP membership. They’ll be running through classics from before the band’s disintegration 25 years ago as well as some new material from their forthcoming album. Lifelong pot-stirrer Ginn may have some choice words for the other version of the band, currently touring as “Flag” with double the original members.

  • Closing reception: Adrian Rumbaut:

Much like author Mo Chorfi, Cuban artist Adrian Rumbaut found creative inspiration in the relentless commodification of Marilyn Monroe (1926-1962) and Ernesto “Che” Guevara (1928-1967). While Morfi’s novel Marilyn and El Che in the Mirror of Love and Death sends a JFK-obsessed Monroe to meet Guevara on a mission to rectify the Bay of Pigs, Rumbaut’s multimedia forays (including the inter-related projects Contraparte and Diagramas Pictóricos) package the pair as  something of a power couple. Fused together in layered portraits and conceptual fashion designs, it’s hard to tell where her Hollywood ends and his revolution begins. “Icons” imports Rumbaut’s intriguing studies in “visual duality” to Bihl Haus Arts.
