Carlton Pride & Mighty Zion

Having a music legend for a parent has gotta be tough. Just ask Sean Lennon, Ziggy Marley, or Frances Bean Cobain. As the son of country legend Charley Pride, Carlton Pride inhabits the ranks of famous offspring who have also made a name for themselves. Being born into his father’s busy music life gave Pride a head start into the industry. Instead of beginning as a musician, though, he picked up some tricks of the trade and became a recording and sound engineer. In the mid-’90s Pride began playing in bands in and around Texas, becoming one of the headlining acts at the Bob Marley Fest from 1996-2003. Pride released What You Need in 2000 — which was recorded at Tuff Gong Studios in Jamaica and included a guest appearance by his father on the track “Kiss An Angel Good Morning.” Over the last 10 years Pride has recorded five studio albums, including a compilation album called The Meaning of Life in 2011 and the latest, Happiness is a Choice, set to be released later this year. The band’s upbeat fusion of funk, blues, and reggae is the perfect soundtrack for any weekend. Free, 7pm-11pm, Blue Star Brewing Company, 1414 S Alamo Ste 105, (210) 212-5506, bluestarbrewing.com
