Million Dollar Quartet

On December 4, 1956, music history was made when Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Johnny Cash struck up an impromptu jam session at Memphis’ Sun Studios (dubbed “Million Dollar Quartet” by an article published the next day). Encompassing gospel, country, R&B, and even a rendition of “Jingle Bells,” the session inspired Floyd Mutrux and Colin Escott’s jukebox musical Million Dollar Quartet. While liberties are taken with the song selection and there’s not a lot to the plot, the Tony nominee still gets crowds animated with a hit parade of early favorites — “Great Balls of Fire,” “Hound Dog,” and “Folsom Prison Blues” among them — and points out the pivotal role Sun Records founder Sam Phillips played in the birth of rock and a chance alignment of stars that led to what some deem the first supergroup.
