Outside the Circle
Described as a “funny, heartbreaking experimental piece about the trials and tribulations of love,” Andrea Assaf and Samuel Valdez’s Outside the Circle centers around a chance meeting between a lesbian and a man afflicted with cerebral palsy. Their lives unfold in a Tijuana bar as they share woes, recount adventures, and tell tales of “unrequited love and unsuccessful attempts to seduce (straight) women.” While it examines contradictions presented by racial, cultural, sexual, and gender identity, the bilingual new play also looks at “what happens to love when we internalize society’s phobias” and “the liberation possible when choosing life outside the circle.” Co-presented by the Esperanza Peace & Justice Center and Jump-Start Performance Co., Outside the Circle contains adult language and content. A post-show dialogue follows each performance. $10-$15; 8pm Fri-Sat, 3pm Sun through Jul 8 (no performance on Fri, Jul 6); The Sterling Houston Theater at Jump-Start, 108 Blue Star, (210) 227-5867, jump-start.org.
