Focus Talk: "Deconstructing Picasso's Guitar and Wine Glass"
Picasso’s Guitar and Wine Glass (1912), one of the most notable pieces in the McNay’s Modern collection, was made in a year considered a turning point in modern art, when both Picasso and Georges Braque experimented with a variety of materials. A key collage piece (and the earliest of Picasso’s owned by the McNay), Guitar and Wine Glass is made of eight pieces of paper, including a piece of newspaper, a corner of sheet music, and a drawing of a wineglass. Join Rose M. Glennon, senior museum educator/editor, at the McNay as she explores how to read the workings of Picasso’s collage. Glennon will examine correspondence between Picasso and Braque that indicates this pivotal piece encoding oppositions — the newspaper article is about war, the music about love — is a jumping-off point in the development of Cubism.
