"If the River Could Talk: 12,000 Years of Life on the San Antonio River"
In conjunction with the San Antonio River Authority’s 75th anniversary, the Witte presents a collection of artifacts discovered during the San Antonio River Improvements Project. In addition to stone tools, Clovis points, and fossils, “If the River Could Talk: 12,000 Years of Life on the San Antonio River” includes a 122-year-old message in a bottle, an ancient bison skeleton discovered near the river’s headwaters (aka the Blue Hole, located on the grounds of the University of the Incarnate Word), a late 19th-century bottle that’s remarkably still filled with century-old beer, and an array of other natural and cultural treasures — many of which haven’t been seen by the public since their excavation. On display in the Piper Memorial Wing, the exhibit also features interactive components and promises “an extraordinary look at the different species that have inhabited the San Antonio River throughout history.”
