Art opening: "International Artist-In-Residence New Works: 12.2"
Artpace rolls out another trio of shows this Thursday in IAIR 12.2, the results of this year’s second round of their famed International Artists-in-Residence program. Jacco Olivier’s dream-like animated videos have been described as “painterly,” and that they are, in spades. To make his shorts, the Amsterdam-based painter makes dozens of small paintings and strings together photos of the colorful abstract and figurative works. His installation at New York’s Madison Square Park last year thrilled pedestrians and pundits; his Artpace project starts with a river walk and adds torrents of luscious paint. Sharing time in NYC and Houston, Leslie Hewitt’s interest in the 1960s social upheavals are explored with archival civil rights photography paired with metal sculpture that implies a 2-D reading of three- dimensional forms. Austin’s Mike Osborne delivers a third dose of photography to the mix, referencing old-time Western scenes with a futuristic twist: trad landscapes in Nevada’s Great Basin Desert join military testing zones, outdoor sports, and casino life in a sci-fi blend of mystery. Free; 6-8:30pm, Artpace, 445 N Main, (210) 212-4900, artpace.com. On view to September 23.
