Artpace

Artpace is San Antonio’s most contemporary arts institution; a combination art lab and community center where something unusual and creative is almost always going on. Founded by the late artist-philanthropist Linda Pace in 1995, Artpace provides residency fellowships for Texas, out-of-state, and international art stars, exhibits hot contemporary work, and performs community outreach and education. Check out its kid-friendly fests such as October’s annual Chalk it Up (wherein artists and regular folk make original chalk drawings on downtown sidewalks), outstanding film series and lectures, and social events such as rooftop concerts and potluck dinners.

  • Anya Gallaccio & Michael Menchaca

Flowers, chocolate, and other unusual suspects factor into the work of Scottish artist Anya Gallaccio, whom San Antonians may remember as the Artpace resident behind 1997’s “they said there was a paradise way out west.” Among the Young British Artists who emerged from the 1988 “Freeze” exhibition organized by Damien Hirst, Gallaccio creates installations likened to “wonderfully unreliable experiments.” Exemplified by preserve “beauty” — which entails 2,000 Gerbera daisies — these happenings drip, dry, decay, and smell — an evolution the artist describes as “both a performance and a collaboration.” Gallaccio returns to Artpace, in the Hudson (Show)Room, with a new project inspired by Texas geology, opening concurrently with local artist Michael Menchaca’s Window Works installation “Autos Sacramentales.”

At Camp Artpace, kids meet and work directly with past and present Artpace artists to gain fascinating insights into style, materials, and techniques. This summer Artpace announces a new partnership with San Antonio Makerspace that will turn Artpace into a contemporary art laboratory and give campers new technology as a way to make art. Registration ends May 24. Camp Artpace I (6-8 years old) runs June 10-14 and Camp Artpace II (9-12 years old) runs June 17-21. For more information please email education@artpace.org.
