“We should do a mural that honors the great musicians of San Anto,” said Manny Castillo before his passing in January. On Saturday, his wish will be fulfilled. The gorgeous, 150-foot wide San Anto Cultural Arts mural, located at the West Commerce Street Bridge, will be blessed by Father “Marty” Eisner (Our Lady of Guadalupe Church), and music will follow. David Blancas is listed as lead muralist, but the work is a truly collective effort: artists Adriana García, Ray Lunch, Gerry and Cardee García, Christian Rodríguez, Pramod Goshai, and Juan González all contributed to different sections of the piece, which honors legends Doug Sahm, Lydia Mendoza, Randy Garibay, Clifford Scott, Rocky Morales, Felix Villarreal, Eva Garza, Valerio Longoria, Rosita Fernández, and, deservedly, Manny himself, who was a hell of a drummer. After a few speeches, the music starts at 12:45 p.m. with Snowbyrd, Manny’s band. The Conjunto Kingz of Flavio Longoria play at 1:30 p.m., and an all-star jam, featuring Frank Rodarte, Ernie Garibay, Randy Garibay Jr., and maybe Shawn Sahm, begins at 2:15 p.m. This is San Anto bigger and better than ever. 11am-3 pm, Sat, Nov 21, West Commerce Street Bridge, sananto.org — Enrique Lopetegui [more]
