ARTIFACTS
(notes on culture)

Fotoseptiembre, the annual celebration of the shutter-driven medium, is out of the gate, with Bantu-Eyez already open at the Carver. You know Artifacts’ weakness: works that question photography’s function and value. This weekend’s reception for John William Keedy at Galeria Ortiz Contemporary (4026 McCullough) should scratch the itch. Keedy grabbed an early 15 minutes of local fame in Blue Star 23: Playing With Time; curator David Rubin of SAMA included double self-portraits by the artist, who wrote last week to say that newer work will be on display for his first solo show, including a series “addressing obsession and stalking,” and portraits of screams. 6-8:30 p.m. August 15.

Artifacts is also thrilled that Southwest School of Art & Craft is featuring New York-based Zoë Sheehan Saldaña for Fotoseptiembre, and the artist will be in town September 12-13 for a talk (free) and a workshop ($225). Saldaña’s past work includes “shopdropping,” in which the artist replaced mass-produced Wal-Mart fashions with hand-crafted facsimiles, and series of cross-stitched portraits. The show opens August 28. Call (210) 224-1848 or visit swschool.org for info/workshop registration.
