Best Singer
Michael Brouillet (Dog Men Poets)
Brouillet’s vocal stylings can best be described as a funky mix of poetic rock and hip-hop accents.

Best Instrumentalist
G-Smiles (Dog Men Poets)
With his signature moves and flashy guitar tricks, G-Smiles brings the funky syncopation for Dog Men Poets.

Best Indie-Rock Band
Dog Men Poets
This crowd-pleasing band showed its range by opening shows for both Fall Out Boy and Black Eyed Peas.

Best Heavy Metal Band
Dead Pool
Influenced by the likes of Testament, Pantera, and Iron Maiden, Dead Pool thrashes with maximum intensity.

Best Hip-Hop Artist
OBX/Dog Men Poets (tie)
From drugs and taxes to death and the Spurs, OBX is an opinionated Latino hip-hop hero, while Dog Men Poets ride their “S.U.V.” into a genre crossover.

Best Jazz Artist
Jim Cullum
The Jim Cullum Jazz Band has long been a River Walk treasure, honoring the nearly lost art of pre-war New Orleans jazz.

Best Conjunto/Tejano Band
Roger Velasquez
With a horn section straight out of the Blues Brothers and a smooth mix of endearing vocals, Roger Velasquez & the Latin Legends nimbly blend oldies, funk, and Tejano material.

Best R&B Artist
Eddie B
This soulful showman beat out the formidable likes of Suzy Bravo & the Soul Revue and Ruben V.

Best Electronica Band
Hyperbubble
Early MTV-era pop meets a Casio keyboard with this digital-age duo, a giddy, sci-fi take on Saturday-morning cartoon bubblegum.

Best Country/Americana Band
Middle Ground
Bob Dylan, the Counting Crows, Bruce Springsteen and Hootie meet at the crossroads (also known as Starbucks), with cello, violin and mandolin thrown in.

Best Singer-Songwriter
Erica Gutierrez
Part Mazzy Star, part PJ Harvey, and part Hurricane Katrina, Ledaswan’s frontwoman howls like a poetic force of nature.

Best DJ
DJ Jester the Filipino Fist
Jester is a pop-culture prankster who convinced the underground hip-hop world that Willie Nelson makes sense with a funk underpinning.

Best Cover Band
The Tim & Bob Show
This mellow, acoustic-based group edged out Papa Wood for cover-band honors.

Best Local-Music Radio Show
Texas Traxx
This weekly KISS 99.5 FM staple celebrates Lone Star rock with a true fan’s zeal.

Best Music-Equipment Store
Krazy Kat
A stroll through this vintage-gear haven is like rummaging through Grandpa’s attic, assuming Grandpa is a hip collector of rare instruments and tube amps.

Best Recording Studio
Studio 37
Studio 37’s victory is made sweeter because they trounced a surprise vote-getter in this category, Spurs guard Manu Ginobili (Current to Spurs fans: Next year, save that vote for the NBA All-Star ballot).

Best Concert Flier
Dog Men Poets/Last of Our Kind (tie)
In the crucial art of self-promotion, Dog Men Poets and art-rockers Last of Our Kind reign supreme with voters.

Best Album of 2007
Verse of Truth Trash and Beauty,
Ledaswan
This moody, enigmatic collection bested worthy efforts from Druggist and Dog Men Poets.

Best Website
dogmenpoets.com
If MTV and Google ever married (a union which would probably require a constitutional amendment), their baby would be the street-team-friendly dogmenpoets.com.

________________________________________________

Full disclosure: Current Design Director Chuck Kerr finished second in the Best Jazz Artist category and Web Coordinator Jaime Monzon finished second in the Best Instrumentalist category, while his band, Ledaswan, took Best Album of 2007, and his bandmate Erica Gutierrez won Best Singer-Songwriter. The Current assures its readers that no gaming of the voting system occurred, though we’re not sure how to explain Chuck and Jaime’s Obama-beating performances in the March 4 Texas primary.

Well it looks like DMP cleaned up - which is a message to all bands - if you don't promote your band and spread the word like DMP did for this - you cannot get any accolades or recognition. I will admit, DMP are one of my favorite bands to watch and definitely a pick for a band I'd go see to have a good time - but my comments on some bands that were left out.

Best Singer - Brou is good no doubt, I think that Matt Barker deserved some recognition as well as Laura Marie.

Indie-Rock band should have gone to Buttercup hands down. DMP was right for being on the Hip-Hop list, or they could have been listed under R&B as well.

Yay for Hyperbubble's victory! Yay for DJ Jester!!

Best concert flier has to be Tattooed Boy (sp?) - his flyers for the Girl In a Coma shows are top notch.

Lastly, the best music website in town is Robb's MetalWorks - a lot of work and determination is put into making that website one of the best ones to go to for Metal, not only for San Antonio, but perhaps on the planet!

I would like for the Current to have listed perhaps runners-up in the categories, or better yet, list the top five vote-getters and then have the readers vote from a poll standpoint, and not just a write-in one.

It usually takes a few days to get a person to judge and complain about the winners. The only thing i have to pass on is this: if you don't like what you see MOVE ON. I know San Antonio may not be the best music scene compared to Los Angeles, New York and even Austin. But you know what, have some hometown pride. If you don't like it, MOVE ON. My next question is what is wrong with just having their families supporting them? What;s wrong with that? You're in San Antonio and we have huge familias.

Furthermore, the San Antonio Current just covered a young band YOUNG GENERATION and they're local and they have sold their share of CDs. Again being supported by their family. Why don't you allow others enjoy their special craft? These people are not hurting anyone; not forcing you to sit and listen to them. Bud, just MOVE ON. If you think you're any better, why don't you do something to make things better?

You claim that the local clubs are run by people that want to make money and showcase bad shows. If you know any of them trying to take advantage, of the bands and the public; what are YOU doing about it?

I had the opportunity to know Ram Ayala. Let me tell you, he did not cared about the music you played. He did not cared if all you had just family coming to the shows. He did not care about what was selling and what was not selling in the market. He never judge a band or a performer. He just loved music. He respected all musicians equally. Taco Land is a monument to many local bands; because they had their best shows there. Ram was always jamming at the bar serving up drinks. Taco Land is a local monument. Support your local bands, artists, music stores, and underground stations. Don't let this bad vibes carry on. In the spirit or Ram Ayala "FUCK YOU ASSHOLE and MOVE ON." Let the music do the talking. I love San Antonio, do you???

Sounds like another bitter, self-conscious LOSER. Mad at the world because of his own failures. Take responsibility do something productive with yourself. The San Antonio music scene is beautiful , well and thriving.

I like how the same bands keep appearing over and over and over and over and over in the SA Current. Nice.

High5mary: You should have directed that comment to the voters, they're the ones that put these musicians on this page. If you think the same bands keep appearing in the Current then suggest something new.

I bet no has ever heard of Studio 37; which is funny for a studio to be around for less than a year and take 2007. You should check them out. http://www.studio37av.com

I find it just wrong that you glorify Ram after he passed. After all it was the Current that refused to list ANY activity at Tacoland because of a song Ram refused to take off his jukebox. The song was "My Wife Left Me For a Nigger". The name of the artist escapes me. The local band DNR did their spin on the deal with their song "Fuck the Current". They played it everytime they played Tacoland because their gigs never were mentioned in the paper. I find a kind of double standard coming from you guys. Shame on you. God bless Ram!

I joined the Current staff as arts editor in December 1993, and if that was the policy, I never heard about it. We've written about Taco Land, the late great Ram, and Ram Jam repeatedly since I became editor in spring 2006. Nicole Chavez, our calendar editor, and Gilbert Garcia, our music editor, are both fans. Whoever authored or promoted that policy is long gone -- "you guys" is an anachronism in this case. Check out the masthead some time.

The Tim and Bob Show? Nice how these people stuff the ballot box! DMP are a good choice, but the rest? Shows how out of touch the Current is, and how the writers' and editors' favorite bands always seem to get coverage and awards!
